STABILIZATION OF RHODAMINE 6G DYE AGAINST UV IRRADIATION BY INCORPORATION INTO SURFACTANT- CONTAINING MESOPOROUS ALMCM-41 MATERIALS

Abstract

 IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE PHOTOPROTECTIVE BEHAVIOR OF THE SURFACTANT MOLECULES, THE AUTHOR EXAMINED THE PHOTODEGRADATION OF RHODAMINE 6G (R6G) AS A MODEL PRESENTED INTO BOTH SURFACTANT-FREE (ALMCM-41 (C)) AND SURFACTANT-CONTAINING (ALMCM-41(AS)), ALMCM-41 MATERIALS AND SUFFERING UV IRRADIATION. THE PHOTODEGRADATION OF THE R6G DYE INTO ALMCM-41 (AS) SAMPLES WAS MUCH SLOWER COMPARED THAT OF ALMCM-41 (C) SAMPLES. THE DIFFUSE REFLECTANCE SPECTROSCOPY DATA FOR R6G-ALMCM-41 (AS) AFTER UV IRRADIATION, CLEARLY DEMONSTRATE THAT R6G IS NOT DECOMPOSED. THIS SUGGESTS THAT THE PHOTOLYSIS OF SURFACTANT MOLECULE, CETYLTRIMETHYLAMMONIUM BROMIDE (CTAB), OCCURS PRIOR TO THAT OF R6G AND THAT CTAB WORKS AS A PHOTOPROTECTIVE MATERIAL. THE ACID EXTRACTION OF THE TEMPLATE WITH ETHANOL WAS PERFORMED FOR SAMPLE R6G-ALMCM-41 (AS). THE DIFFUSE REFLECTANCE SPECTRUM OF THE SURFACTANT-EXTRACTED SAMPLE DIDN’T SHOW ANY ABSORPTION BAND IN THE VISIBLE REGION. IT SHOWS THAT R6G MOLECULES MIGHT BE PRESENTED WITHIN THE SURFACTANT MICELLE OCCUPIED ALMCM-41 PORES.
