Abstract

 HEAVY METAL POLLUTION IS A GLOBAL PROBLEM AND IT CAUSES THREAT TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN BEINGS. AMONG THE DIFFERENT HEAVY METAL IONS, MERCURY HAS RECEIVED CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION DUE TO ITS HIGHLY TOXIC AND BIO ACCUMULATIVE PROPERTIES. MERCURY VAPOR LAMPS, FLUORESCENT LAMPS, ELECTRICAL SWITCHES, BATTERIES, THERMOMETERS AND ELECTRODES ARE THE SECOND LARGEST SOURCES OF MERCURY DIS- CHARGE TO THE ENVIRONMENT. IT ACCUMULATES IN THE ENVIRONMENT AND CAN PRODUCE TOXIC EFFECTS EVEN AT LOW CONCENTRATIONS FURTHER; IT IS THE ONLY METAL THAT CAN EXIST AS A LIQUID AND AS A VOLATILE FORM AT AMBIENT TEMPERATURE. HIGH LEVEL OF HG (II) CAUSES CELLULAR TOXICITY AND CARCINOGENIC AND METHYL MERCURY LEADS TO SEVERAL LIFE THREATENING DISEASES [1–3]. THE CAPABILITY OF SOME LIGANDS HAS BEEN USED TO REMOVE HEAVY METALS FROM SOILS AND WATERS. IN THE PARTICULAR CASE OF HG (II), THE HIGH AFFINITY THAT INORGANIC FORMS OF THIS METAL ION POSSESS FOR BIOMOLECULES CONTAINING AMINE GROUPS IN COMPARISON WITH OTHER GROUPS LIKE PHOSPHATE, CARBOXYL, AMIDE OR SULPHYDRYL IS WELL DESCRIBED. IT WAS FOUND THAT AROMATIC HETEROCYCLIC LIGANDS CONTAINING BITHIAZOLE RINGS ARE GOOD BECAUSE THE TWO NITROGEN ATOMS IN THE BITHIAZOLE RINGS ARE ABLE TO CHELATE METAL IONS TO FORM STABLE FIVE MEMBER RINGS. IN THE PRESENT PAPER, WE REPORT THE SYNTHESES AND CHARACTERIZATION OF NEW HG (II) COMPLEX CONTAINING BITHIAZOLE LIGAND. THIS STUDY DEMONSTRATES THAT BITHIAZOLE LIGAND MAY BE SUITABLE LIGAND FOR THE REMOVING OF HG (II).
