APPLICATION OF PHOTO/PERIODATE AOP FOR IN SITU DEGRADATION OF FURFURAL IN AQUEOUS MEDIA

Abstract

 FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE DEGRADATION OF THE FURFURAL (F) WAS DONE BY THE PHOTO ACTIVATED PERIODATE (UV/IO4-) USING A RECYCLED UP FLOW BATCH CYLINDRICAL REACTOR. THE POSSIBLE MECHANISM BASED ON THE PERIODATE PHOTOCHEMISTRY WAS DISCUSSED, IN ORDER TO ELUCIDATE THE MAIN ACTIVE SPECIES INVOLVED. DESIGN OF EXPERIMENT WAS UTILIZED TO MODEL AND OPTIMIZE OF THE PROCESS. A QUADRATIC MODEL CONSTRUCTED THE DEPENDENCY OF THE DEGRADATION EFFICIENCY (DE), AS THE MODEL RESPONSE, WITH THE PI INITIAL CONCENTRATION AND INITIAL PH WELL. THE ANOVA ANALYSIS CONFIRMED BOTH OF THE VARIABLES HAVE SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE ON THE MODEL RESPONSE.THE DEGRADATION RATE WAS INCREASED AT LOW PERIODATE DOSAGE (0–7.86 MM), WHILE SLIGHTLY IS DECREASED AT THE HIGHER LEVELS (>7.86 MM). ALSO, THE MAIN OXIDANTS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE F DEGRADATION WERE FOUND TO BE •OH AND IO3•. UNDER THE DESIRED OPTIMUM CONDITIONS (PH= 5.28, [KPI] =7.86 MM), 93.81% DE AND 74.63% COD REMOVAL WAS ACHIEVED AFTER 25 MIN.
