Abstract

 THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF EDIBLE OILS ARE UNRIVALED AND RESEARCH REVEALS MORE BENEFITS NEARLY EVERY DAY [1]. THE QUALITY OF THE EDIBLE OIL IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE CONCENTRATION OF TRACE METALS IN IT. SOME METALS ARE TOXIC AND SOME MAY PROMOTE THE OXIDATIVE DEGRADATION OF THE OIL. THUS, DETERMINATION OF TRACE METALS IN EDIBLE OILS IS IMPORTANT FROM THE HEALTH POINT OF VIEW. AMONG METALS, LEAD AND CADMIUM ARE THE PRECARIOUS ONES AND CHILDREN ARE MORE SENSITIVE TO THEM. LEAD AND CADMIUM ARE NOT NECESSARY ELEMENTS IN PLANT NUTRITION, THEY ARE EASILY TRANSFERRED FROM SOIL TO PLANTS BY PHOSPHATE-BASED FERTILIZERS. DUE TO THE LOW LEVELS OF LEAD AND CADMIUM CONCENTRATIONS IN EDIBLE OILS, THEIR DETERMINATION IN THESE SAMPLES OFTEN NEED A PRETREATMENT STEP. THE AIM OF THIS WORK IS TO CONSIDER THE CAPABILITY OF DEEP EUTECTIC LIQUID ORGANIC SALT FOR THE EXTRACTION OF HEAVY METALS FROM EDIBLE OIL SAMPLES. LEAD AND CADMIUM WERE SELECTED AS THE MODEL ELEMENTS AND A RELIABLE MICROEXTRATION METHOD WAS DEVELOPED. THE EXTRACTED ANALYTES WERE DETERMINED BY ETAAS. UNDER THE OPTIMIZED EXTRACTION CONDITIONS FOR A SAMPLE VOLUME OF 40 ML, ENHANCEMENT FACTORS OF 198 AND 195, AND LIMITS OF DETECTION (DEFINED AS 3SB/M) OF 5 AND 0.10 NG L-1 WERE ACHIEVED FOR LEAD AND CADMIUM, RESPECTIVELY. THE METHOD WAS SUCCESSFULLY APPLIED TO THE DETERMINATION OF LEAD AND CADMIUM IN VARIOUS EDIBLE OILS.
