Abstract

 BACKGROUND: POLYOXOMETALATES (POMS) HAVE RECENTLY GAINED SIGNIFICANT INTEREST, OWING TO THEIR VERSATILE ARCHITECTURE, FACILE SYNTHESIS, MAGNETIC, MATERIAL PROPERTIES, AND ESPECIALLY CATALYTIC ACTIVITIES. [1] GIANT POMS, ESPECIALLY SPHERICAL BALL-LIKE CLUSTERS, ARE NANOSCALE ARCHITECTURES WITH MORE THAN 500 ATOMS AND THE HIGHEST EUCLIDEAN SYMMETRY. [2] IN PARTICULAR, SOME TYPES OF HYDROPHILIC SOLUBLE POM MACROANIONS SHOW UNIQUE SOLUTION BEHAVIOR. IT IS WIDELY EXPECTED THAT SOLUBLE INORGANIC IONS SHOULD DISTRIBUTE HOMOGENEOUSLY IN DILUTE SOLUTIONS. HOWEVER, THIS IS NO LONGER TRUE FOR VERY LARGE ANIONIC POM CLUSTERS IN POLAR SOLVENTS SUCH AS WHEEL-SHAPED {MO154}. [3] RECENTLY, A LIMITED REPORTS ON CATALYTIC ACTIVITY OF KEPLERATE NANOBALLS HAVE BEEN REPORTED. [4-6]METHODS: THE OXIDATION OF DIFFERENT OLEFINS WAS RUN UNDER AIR USING TERT-BUTYL HYDROPEROXIDE (TBHP) IN ETHANOL AT 60OC.RESULTS: MOST OF OLEFINS WERE CONVERTED SELECTIVELY TO THE RELATED EPOXIDES IN HIGH YIELDS. HOWEVER, TERMINAL OLEFINS CONJUGATED TO PHENYL RINGS GAVE CARBONYL COMPOUNDS RESULTING FROM REARRANGEMENT OR C-C BOND BREAKING AT RELATIVELY HIGH TEMPERATURE.CONCLUSION: THE NANOPOLYOXOMOLYBDATE CATALYST PROVED TO BE VERY EFFICIENT TOWARD EPOXIDATION OF OLEFINS USING TBHP IN ETHANOL AS A SAFE SOLVENT UNDER HETEROGENEOUS CONDITIONS. THE REUSABILITY OF THE NANO-CATALYST HAS BEEN TESTED.
