Abstract

 COMPOUNDS CONTAINING IIB ELEMENTS ARE PARTICULARLY ATTRACTIVE FOR MANY REASONS: THE VARIETY OF COORDINATION NUMBERS AND GEOMETRIES PROVIDED BY THE D10 CONFIGURATION OF THE IIB METAL IONS, PHOTOELECTRIC PROPERTIES, FLUORESCENCE PROPERTIES, WIDESPREAD APPLICATIONS OF IIB COMPOUNDS, THE ESSENTIAL ROLE IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS OF ZINC, AND SO ON [1]. AS A SOFT CLOSED-SHELL CATION, HG2+ HAS A PRONOUNCED AFFINITY TO NITROGEN-DONOR LIGANDS, LIKE PYRIDINE [2].BIPYRIDINE IS A VERY POPULAR COMPLEXING AGENT. IN THE UNCOORDINATED MOLECULE THE NITROGEN ATOMS ARE TRANS, WHEREAS IN THE VAST MAJORITY OF METAL COMPLEXES STUDIED BY X-RAY DIFFRACTION THEY ARE CIS [3]. DIFFERENT LIGANDS HAVE BEEN USED TO STUDY MERCURY (II) COMPLEXES, FOR EXAMPLE THIOCYANATE LIGAND, THIS ION IS AN AMBIDENTATE LIGAND AND CAN BE COORDINATED VIA BOTH ITS N AND S ATOM. THE COORDINATION MODE DEPENDS ON THE NATURE OF THE METAL CENTER. THE MERCURY (II) COMPLEXES CONTAINING MIXED ANIONS INCLUDING THIOCYANATE ARE INTERESTING NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE STRUCTURAL CHEMISTRY OF MULTIFUNCTION COORDINATION MODE OF THE THIS LIGAND, BUT ALSO THEY CAN SHOW THE COMPETITION OF LIGANDS FOR COORDINATION TO MERCURY ATOM IN A SINGLE COMPLEX SYSTEM, IN WHICH CASE THE MAIN SECTION OF THE COORDINATION SPHERE REMAIN THE SAME [4]. IN THIS WORK, FROM THE REACTION OF HG(SCN)2 WITH 5,5ʹ- DIMETHYL-2,2ʹ-BIPYRIDINE LIGAND (IN 1:1 MOLE RATIO) A NEW COMPLEX OF HG(II) WAS SYNTHESIZED (SCHEME. 1). FERTHERMORE, THIS COMPLEX WAS THOROUGHLY CHARACTERIZED BY ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS, IR, NMR, UV-VIS AND FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY.
