Abstract

 BACKGROUND: DYES ARE AROMATIC ORGANIC COLORANTS AND HAVING POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS IN TEXTILE, PLASTIC, RUBBER, PAPER AND FOOD INDUSTRIES. THE EFFLUENTS DISCHARGE FROM DYEING INDUSTRIES IS HIGHLY COLORED WITH A LARGE AMOUNT OF SUSPENDED ORGANIC SOLID. THEREFORE, THE TREATMENT OF EFFLUENT CONTAINING SUCH DYE IS OF INTEREST. VARIOUS TREATMENTS TECHNIQUES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FOR TREATING WATER AND WASTEWATERS EMBEDDED WITH DYES [1, 2].SAWDUST IS ONE OF THE PROMISING ADSORBENTS FOR REMOVING DYE POLLUTANTS FROM WASTEWATERS. THIS ADSORBENT WHICH OBTAINS FROM THE WOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY IS A LIGNOCELLULOSIC WASTE MATERIAL. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT SAWDUST AND MODIFIED SAWDUST HAVE A SORPTION CAPACITY FOR THE REMOVAL OF MOST KINDS OF DYES FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION [3, 4].METHODS: THE SAWDUST WAS COLLECTED FROM SAWMILL IN YAZD, IRAN. SAWDUST WAS WASHED SEVERAL TIMES TO REMOVE ADHERING DIRT, RINSED THOROUGHLY WITH DISTILLED WATER AND FINALLY DRIED AT 60OC FOR 24 H. THE DRIED SAWDUST WAS GROUND TO PASS THROUGH A 1 MM SIEVE AND LABELED AS NATURAL SAWDUST. BROMOPHENOL RED (BPR) DYE WAS PURCHASED FROM MERCK AND USED WITHOUT FURTHER PURIFICATION. UV-VIS SPECTROPHOTOMETER 160 A SHIMADZU WAS USED FOR DETERMINATION OF CONCENTRATION OF BPR. ALL PH MEASUREMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT WITH AN ISTEK- 720P PH METER. THE PERCENT REMOVAL OF BPR BY THE HEREBY ADSORBENT IS GIVEN BY: % REMOVAL= (C0-CE) /C0×100 WHERE C0, CEIS DENOTED THE INITIAL AND EQUILIBRIUM CONCENTRATION (MG L-1) OF BPR RESPECTIVELY.RESULTS: THE SORPTION CAPACITY OF THE SORBENT WAS STUDIED BY VARYING THE PH IN THE RANGE OF 2.0-11. RESULTS CLEARLY INDICATES THAT THE SORPTION PROCESS IS STRONGLY PH DEPENDENT AND THE MAXIMUM UPTAKE OF THE DYE OCCURS AT PH 7. THUS, THE PH 7 WAS SELECTED AS OPTIMUM FOR FOLLOWING STUDY. THE REDUCTION OF BPR REMOVAL IN HIGHER PH MAY BE DUE TO THE INCREASE OF REPULSIVE FORCE BETWEEN THE FUNCTIONAL GROUPS ON THE SURFACE OF SAWDUST AND BPR. THE EFFECT OF CONTACT TIME ON THE PERCENTAGE OF COLOR REMOVAL AT 25OC WAS EXAMINED. THE RESULTS ALSO DEMONSTRATES, THE AMOUNT OF COLOR REMOVAL WERE APPEARED WITH NATURAL SAWDUST EFFICIENCY 75% AFTER 30 MIN OF CONTACT TIME.CONCLUSION: THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION SHOWS THAT SAWDUST WAS A CAPABLE NATURAL LOW-COST ADSORBENT TO BE USED FOR REMOVAL OF BPR FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS.
