Abstract

 IN THE PRESENT STUDY THE MECHANISM OF PHOTO CATALYTIC DEGRADATION OF FURFURAL IN WASTEWATER WAS STUDIED. THE IMPREGNATION METHOD WAS USED TO IMMOBILIZE THE TIO2 NANO PARTICLES ON A GLASS SUPPORT MATERIAL. THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS COATED GLASS PLATE WAS TESTED INTO A PHOTO CATALYTIC REACTOR. THE INTERMEDIATE PRODUCTS THAT PRODUCED IN DURING OF REACTION HAVE BEEN ANALYZED BY HPLC AND HPLC-MASS. CONCERNING THE DEGRADATION MECHANISM OF FURFURAL, THERE ARE THREE STEPS GENERALLY EXPECTED, INCLUDING ALDEHYDE GROUP OXIDATION, PHOTO-OXIDATION OF AROMATIC RING AND CLEAVAGE OF RING. THE INTERMEDIATES OF PHOTO-OXIDATION OF FURFURAL WERE MALEIC AND 2, 3-DIHYDROXY-SUCCINIC (TARTARIC), ACIDS.
