Abstract

An outbreak of chronic copper (Cu) poisoning of Iranian fat-tailed sheep was described. At least 10000 out of 75000 sheep (13.3%) on 50 flocks, in Khatoon Abad region in Kerman province of Iran, died during a period of 3 year. The diagnosis was based on Epidemiological, clinical, hematological, serum biochemical, urinalysis, necropsy and histopathological findings and confirmed by toxicological identification of high liver and kidney Cu concentrations. Average CU concentration was 1196.9±20.6ppm in Liver and 137.2±8.96ppm in kidney samples. The pollution by a Cu smelter factory in the region was the source of intoxication.
