Title

EFFECTS OF DIMETHYL DISULFIDE AND DIETHYL DISULFIDE (DSO) ON MICROBIAL COMMUNITIES IN SOIL

Pages

  107-117

Abstract

DSO is produced as a waste in the Oil and Gas Company in Asalooieh (Iran). This waste has a bad odor and causes contamination in air, soil and water. Before using soil as a biofilter, the effect of this compound on soil has been investigated because of its serious environmental health problems. In this study, by adding DSO (different concentrations) to soil, the effect of DSO in microbial ecosystem was investigated. The experiments were done during 3-12 months. The results show that most Gram negative bacteria in soils are sensitive to these compounds while Gram positive bacteria are resistant. In addition, the number of isolated Bacillus from soil increased from 10 to 3000 by addition of DSO. This was approved by production of DNA and protein in soil during addition of DSO. The isolated Bacillus, identified as Bacillus cereus, did not have any growth on salt (%6.5), suggesting that it is not halophil. The pH of soil with DSO had no change and there was no evidence for production of SH2 in soil. Cellulase activities of soil decreased by addition of DSO to soil, while the catalyses activities of soil increased in the presence of DSO. The results showed that the number of Gram negative bacteria decreased while the number of Gram positive bacteria with catalyses activity increased.
