Abstract

Following an epidemic of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) in the Jarghooyeh rural district. southeast of ISFAHAN, an entomological survey was conducted during 1996-98. Sandflies were collected biweekly from human dwellings and rodent burrows using sticky (oiled) paper traps. Some blood-fed and gravid female sandflies were examined for the presence of leptomonad. The susceptibility status of Phlebotomus papatasi to DOT 4% was studied in the field surveys following the WHO standard method. Impregnated papers were supplied by WHO. A total of 6266 sandflies were collected and six species were identified. The predominant species were P.papatasi indoors and P ansarii in rodent burrows in the area. Natural leptomonad infection was found in P.papatasi (4.8%). P.caucasicus (12.5%). P.ansarii (7.7%) and Sergentomyia sintoni (2%) from rodent burrows. and only in P.papalasi (3.7%) from indoors. LEISHMANIA MAJOR zymodeme MON-26 was isoiated from naturally infected P.caucasicus in the rodent burrows. Susceptibility tests carried out with 4% DOT showed that P.papalasi is susceptible to this insecticide. This species was found to be resistant to DOT 4% in Bihar (India) and Turkey, and also tolerant to this insecticide in Borkhar rural district, ISFAHAN province.
