Abstract

Saffron (Crocus sativus) is a member of Iridaceae that grows in different parts of Irano - Turani climatic region. Our knowledge of saffron cultivation is adequate, but there is little information available regarding its mycorrhizal symbiosis. In this research, 3 cultivars of saffron selected from the most predominat growing regions of Iran were investigated for their mycorrhizal symbiosis in situ. Vesiculalr - arbuscular mycorrhiza was observed in all cultivars. Acaulospora morrowiae and Glomus coronatum were dominant endomycorrhizal forming species from suborder Glominae. Application of endomycorrhizal spores in saffron fields would improve its yield and extened its growing areas into more stressful lands without much need to fertilizers.
