Abstract

 During antiquity, STYLE="font-style:inherit;color:#ff0078">RHETORIC and STYLE="font-style:inherit;color:#ff0078"> GRAMMAR formed the main approaches to linguistic and stylistic studies. This essay focuses on “figures of speech” as a stylistic device and tends to shed light upon its status in ancient STYLE="font-style:inherit;color:#ff0078">RHETORICal and grammatical traditions. Part one is devoted to STYLE="font-style:inherit;color:#ff0078">RHETORIC and the TAXONOMY of “figures of speech” according to Greek and Roman STYLE="font-style:inherit;color:#ff0078">RHETORICians. Part two is an exposition of grammatical figures according to Aelius Donatus’ Ars Grammatica, and examines the differences of these two approaches as regards the TAXONOMY of “figures of speech”.
