GMS which is known as mono stearin is a solid and waxy like material.
This material is mainly in the form of white or cream flakes with a mild greasy odor. It’s affected by light and has a melting point of 57-59. GMS is used as thickener and/or emulsioning agent in food, hugene, drug or other industries.
This project by using the results of laboratory phase, Design and construction of a pilot plant for
production of GMS has been operated. The stages in this project include:
1- Principle and detailed Design of the unit.
2- Purchasing and construction of required equipments.
3- Installation and setting out the unit.
All equipments have been constructed by internal producers, so there wasn’t any foreign currency expense for operation of this project.
The equipments were so designed that this pilot can operate in a multifunctional manner. The equipments of this pilot unit were installed in University Jahad research center, situated in Haljerd near Karaj city, and tentative production of this material has been done to come to an optimum production condition on four runs.
As a result, optimum production condition of this material was gained in 290oC with a mole ration of 2:1 Glycerol to stearat Acid in this presence of sodium glycerol oxid catalyst.
Also, possibility of extra Glycerol reconsumption in later reactions, has drastically reduced the need of its recovery by distillation unit. Using Nitrogene gas with high purity to avoid the darkening of the product is suggested.
