Lack of thorough and multilateral survey of sustainable development caused the Shahid Baheshti Port to drop behind time line of the national project and its main plan (for about two years). This backwardness put down the role of Chabahar Port as the most important Entry Gate of the East-axis in the southeast area of Iran which is one of the main and key elements of Islamic Republic of Iran strategic plan to develop and activate eastern corridor. Furthermore Dropping behind the plan also mean missing the opportunities and it imposes lots of financial expenses (because of inflation and rising prices) for the Ports and Maritime Organization. Although a large number of researches have been done in the field of sustainable development in the world which mostly have been carried out on the issue of environment but still there have not been enough researches in the field of ports, even though having specific features and characteristics. In Iran except some limited descriptive studies there has not been any specific profound research. The main subject of this dissertation is survey of indices of sustainable development pertaining to Iranian ports and their application level in the development plan of Shahid Beheshti Port. The aims of this research are the identifying of terms and definitions of sustainable development of the ports in order to classify key and important indices for the port sustainable development and also addressing their application level in the Shahid Beheshti development plan by a mix exploring method. For this purpose a case study related to the basic planning of the sustainable development and general setting and applying development of new ideas as the solutions to the sustainable development of the ports. First by conducting interviews and focal group meetings and by utilizing theme analytical method, primary indices have been recognized and regarding the information from literature review including UN indices and also indices from four major ports worldwide (Los Angles, Antwerp, Sidney and Rotterdam), research hypothesis have been stated and a questionnaire have been prepared and circulated in accordance with them and their outcome have been analyzed using one sample T test. Finally social, economical, environmental and organizational indices as the main indices including frothy sub-indices influencing sustainability of developments in Iranian port’s developing plans have been recognized. Furthermore it’s been grounded that application level of social, economical and organizational indices in shahid beheshti port’s developing plan are in good and very good state (4 to 5 out of 5) in average and some environmental sub-indices have not been applicated completely.
