Sulfur is the fourth element required for good crop growth. Sulfur is needed by plants in about more quantities than phosphorus. This element is required for synthesis of amino acids and protein and sulfur deficiency results in low quality of the agricultural product.
Positive effects of sulfur has been proven on increasing of soluble salt and alkaline and salinity soil amendment.
This report includes eight chapter of different forms and function of sulfur in soil and plants and different kinds of sulfur fertilizers with production process of them.
Iran is one of the most important sulfur producers of the Middle East because of the rich source of petroleum. Considering the great amount of extra sulfur production and its derivatives like sulfuric acid in the country, its potential uses in agriculture are interesting. This report presents some information on sulfur production and its consumption in various industrial sections as well as sulfur fertilizers production and the country’s need for this product.
As sulfur is used extensively in salty and alkaline lands amendments, the soil survey and land classification of Iran was proceed.
At last, environmental impacts of sulfur fertilizers and their accepted limits were evaluated.
Considering the important role of sulfur and sulfur containing fertilizers in enhancement of the products quality and the day to day expansion of the salty and alkaline lands, their agricultural applications deserve to be paid more attention.
