The research is a study of the attitude of the young in Mashhad towards the elements of religious and national identity in order identify the cognitive, emotional and behavioral direction of the young in Mashhad towards the main items constructing Iranian and Islamic identity. The society of the research includes all 18-28 year old girls and boys residing in Mashhad. The sample consists of 600 who were selected according to proportional stratified sampling design. National identity was studied considering love of home, historical-cultural and social aspects and religious identity considering social, historical- cultural and religion itself, means of collecting data was questionnaire including Likert scale. Cognitive, emotional and behavioral dimensions were respectively measured by 19, 18 and 21 sentences. The instrument validity was obtained through judges agreement and to ensure the reliability the Cronbach’s Alfa was used. The Cronbach’s Alfa was measured for total scale of religious and national identity equal to %93, for religious identity subscale %85 and for national identity subscale 93%. The research findings suggest:
1- Towards the R.N.I %79 of informants expressed positive; %19.7 neutral and %0.9 negative direction.
2- Towards the N.I %762 of the informants expressed expressed positive direction, %23 neutral and %0.9 negative directions. Studying the three dimensions of N.I showed that in cognitive dimension bout %60.2 informants expressed positive direction, %36.5 neutral directions and %3.3 negative directions. In the emotional dimension the percentages were respectively %83.2, %15.6 and %1.2 and in the behavioral dimension were respectively %72.4. %24 and %3.6 the estimated were 2.54 for total scale of N.1 and 2.4, 2.66 and 2.54 (in the range of 1-3) respectively for cognitive, emotional and behavioral dimensions.
3- Towards the religions identity, %80.6 of informants expressed positive direction, %17.2 neutral and %2.1 negative directions. In the cognitive dimension %83.2 of informants expressed positive direction, %14.2 neutral directions and %2.8 negative directions. The proportions for emotional were respectively 2.9, 16.0 and 1.81 and for behavioral dimension respectively 5.7, 18.9 and 75.5. The mean for total scale of religious identity was calculated as 2.61 and for the triple dimensions, cognitive, emotional and behavioral respectively 2.53, 2.67 and 2.65 (in the range of 1-3).
4- The scores of attitude towards religious and national identity according to their constructing elements were as follow: In national identity area mean was 2.82, for historical-cultural aspect was 2.59 and home love had the for social dimension mean of 2.52 (in the range of 1-3). In religious identity area, the mean for social dimension was 2.62, for historical-cultural 2.55 and for religion itself the mean was 2.41.
