Endometriosis Health Profile-5 (EHP-5) is a valid instrument to measure health-related quality of life in endometriosis. This study was conducted to culturally adapt and validate the EHP-5 in Iran. This questionnaire was originally designed by Georgina Jones and her colleagues in 2001, including two main and modular parts and with 11 items (The first part consists of 5 items and the second part consists of 6 items). This study included the following three separate steps:
a. Preparation of Persian version the EHP-5 questionnaire:
(1) Translation of the questionnaire into Persian
(2) Analysis of the Persian translation
(3) Back translation into English
(4) Collection of expert panel opinions
(5) Evaluating face validity
b. Assessing validity of the Persian version of the questionnaire
(1) Face Validity
(2) content validity
c. Assessing reliability of the Persian version of the questionnaire
The participants were 199 women with newly laparoscopically confirmed diagnosis of endometriosis, accepted to participate in the study. Convenient sampling method was used. The mean age of respondents was 31.4 (5.4) years. Reliability analysis showed satisfactory result (Cronbach's alpha coefficient=0.71). The questionnaire discriminated well between sub-groups of women differing in infertility and premenstrual symptom (PMS) in the expected direction.
This preliminary validation study of the Iranian version of the EHP-5 proved that it is an acceptable, reliable and valid measure of quality of life in endometriosis patients.
