Abstract:

SINCE THE ANCIENT TIMES TO THE PRESENT, TRADITIONAL FIGURES HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SIGNS OF THE TASTE, THE BEAUTY- CRAVING SPIRIT, BELIEFS, AND THE RITUALISTIC AND MYTHICAL IDEAS OF THE IRANIAN SOCIETY. AMONG THESE FIGURES, BOTEH JEGHEH (ANCIENT MOTIF) HAS BEEN GREATLY DISCUSSED AS TO ITS ORIGIN AND MYTHICAL MEANINGS. REGARDLESS OF THE AESTHETIC ASPECTS OF IRANIAN HANDICRAFTS, THE PRESENT STUDY STATES THAT: A. BOTEH JEGHEH COULD HAVE TAKEN ITS ORIGINS FROM THE MYTHS ROOTED IN THE RELIGIOUS BELIEFS OF ANCIENT IRANIANS, AND THUS HAS NEVER BEEN IMPRINTED AND WOVEN ONTO CARPETS, LEST IT WOULD BE TRODDEN, BUT HAS BEEN AN ORNAMENT FOR THE KINGS' CROWN. B. THIS FIGURE COULD BE A SYMBOL OF THE CEDAR TREE WHICH, IN MITHRAISM, STANDS FOR SUN OR MITHRA. C. IT COULD BE THE SYMBOL OF PHOENIX. D. IT COULD BE A SYMBOL OF HUMA (ANCIENT IRANIAN MYTHICAL EAGLE) WHICH STANDS FOR GOD’S GLORY OR FOR BAHRAM (VERETHRAGNA), THE GOD OF VICTORY- SINCE BAHRAM IS A COMPANION TO MITHRA, BOTEH JEGHEH COULD BE RELATED TO MITHRAISM.
