Abstract: 

Present process of brick making in Fars province which is based on obtaining raw materials from alluvial and agricultural soils, results in destruction of habitat and limitation of agricultural land. Purple shale member of pabdeh formation south eastern of Shiraz is investigated as a possible new source. According to geochemical analyses, SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O, Mgo and CaO are the most abundant elements. Mineralogical analyses by X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicate that major minerals are Montmorillonite, Quartz, Calcite, Albite and Dolomite. Comparison of the chemical and XRD analyses and standard composition of brick clay indicate that this clay is suitable for brick making. Low ratio of calcium oxide to iron oxide results in brown red brick and absence of sulfur minerals results in "not effloresced" brick. Investigation of Ateberg limits and high clay minerals indicate that this clay has sufficient plasticity for molding. Evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of baked brick based on ASTM standards, indicate that the brick has high compress strength, low water absorption and saturation coefficients and high durability. High durability due to high clay minerals and quartz provides useable bricks in high weathering regions (SW). Accordingly the purple shale member of pabdeh formation is ideal for brick making. In respect exposure of this member in southern regions of Fars province and to avoid destruction of habitat, substitution of alluvial sources with this new source recommended.
