Abstract: 

Carbonate and detrital deposits (Paleocene? to Eocene) equivalent to the Fajan Formation are exposed in northeast of Tehran, Fil-e-Zamin area (36 o 50 ' 30 '' N, 51 o 52 ' 30'' E). These deposits overlay the Upper Cretaceous deposits over an erosional contact, and are underlain by the Karaj Formation tuffs with an unconformable contact. Field observations and thin-section studies, indicate deposition in terrestrial (fluvial-lacustrine) and marine depositonal environments. The terrestrial deposits are consisted of fluvial red shale and sandstone and dark limestone of lacustrine facies. The lacustrine deposits consisted of lime mudstone, Charophyta bioclast wackestone/ packstone, fenestral algal boundstone and microbial builds up. The marine deposits include carbonate and terrigenous facies.
