Abstract: 

1. INTRODUCTION: MOST PUNCH-THROUGH FAILURES HAPPEN DURING THE JACKING UP AND PRELOADING OF JACK UP PLATFORM IN LOCATIONS WITH STRATIFIED SOIL PROFILES WHERE A RELATIVELY THIN LAYER OF SAND OR STIFF CLAY OVERLYING A WEAKER LAYER. PUNCH THROUGH CAUSES A REDUCTION IN BEARING CAPACITY WITH DEPTH, CAUSING INSTABILITY DURING THE LOAD-CONTROLLED JACKING-UP PROCESS. SPUD CAN PUNCH-THROUGH FAILURE IS A MAJOR CAUSE OF FOUNDATION FAILURE OF OFFSHORE JACK UP RIGS. JACK UPS OF ALL DESIGN TYPES MAY EXPERIENCE PUNCH THROUGH AND THEIR RESULTING DAMAGES TO THE BRACES, CHORDS AND JACKING UNITS. THE ACCIDENTAL LOADING RESULTED FROM A PUNCH THROUGH CAN LEAD TO SEVERAL TYPES OF LEG DAMAGE INCLUDING BUCKLING OF THE BRACES, BUCKLING OR SHEARING OF THE CHORD, PUNCHING SHEAR AND JOINT DAMAGE. IN THIS STUDY THE BUCKLING AND POST BUCKLING OF THE BRACES IN JACK CASE WILL BE INVESTIGATED.
