Abstract: 

INTRODUCTION: PROTECTION OF COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS IS A VITAL ISSUE IN MANY COUNTRIES. TO PROTECT RESIDENTS FROM THE ACTION OF OCEAN WAVES, MARINE STRUCTURES (SUCH AS SEAWALLS, CAISSON ETC.) HAVE BEEN WIDELY USED FOR THIS PROTECTION. THE DAMAGE OF MARINE STRUCTURES MAY ARISE FROM TWO FAILURE MODES. THE FIRST MODE IS STRUCTURAL FAILURE, CAUSED BY THE WAVE FORCES ACTING ON THE STRUCTURES. THE SECOND MODE IS WAVE-INDUCED SEABED INSTABILITY (SUCH AS LIQUEFACTION AND SCOUR) IN THE VICINITY OF THE STRUCTURE. THUS, A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE WAVE BOTTOM BOUNDARY IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT FOR COASTAL ENGINEERS INVOLVED IN THE DESIGN OF COASTAL STRUCTURES.
