Abstract: 

POLY (VINYL ALCOHOL) HYDROGELS PREPARED BY FREEZING/THAWING PROCESSES HAVE BEEN PROPOSED AS A SUITABLE COUPLING MEDIUM FOR TRANSMISSION OF ULTRASOUND. MEASUREMENTS INDICATED THAT THE GELS WATER CONTENT AND DENSITY MATCH THOSE OF HUMAN TISSUE AND THEREFORE THERE WAS MINIMUM REFLECTION OF SOUND AT THE INTERFACE OF THESES GELS AND BODY TISSUE. ALSO, IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE AMOUNT OF ATTENUATION OF SOUND OF THESE GELS DECREASES WITH INCREASING OF WATER CONTENT. BUT, BECAUSE THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH DECREASES AS THE WATER CONTENT INCREASES, IN CHOOSING THE POLY (VINYL ALCOHOL) CONCENTRATION, A COMPROMISE MUST BE MADE BETWEEN THE ATTENUATION AND MECHANICAL STRENGTH. MEASUREMENTS INDICATED THAT THE GELS WITH 5% WT. POLY (VINYL ALCOHOL) HAD SUITABLE ATTENUATION AND MECHANICAL STRENGTH.
