Abstract: 

RUPTURE OF VULNERABLE ATHEROSCLEROTIC PLAQUES CORRELATES TO COAGULATING THROMBUS WHICH RESULTS IN MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION OR STROKES. PLAQUE MORPHOLOGY, INCLUDING GEOMETRY AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES, AFFECTS STRESS CONCENTRATION WHICH RESULT IS FRACTURE OF PLAQUES. FORTUNATELY, EXISTING STANDARD IMAGE MODALITIES, SUCH AS IVUS AND OCT, PROVIDES SOME INFORMATION FROM THE STRUCTURE AND HISTOLOGICAL COMPOSITIONS OF DISEASED WALLS AND HENCE MEET SOME REQUIREMENTS FOR MECHANICAL INVESTIGATIONS. THE PRESENT IN VIVO STUDY IS AIMED TO CREATE MORPHOLOGICAL MODELS FROM IVUS IMAGES. THESE MODELS REPRESENT TWO-DIMENSIONAL GEOMETRIES AND HISTOLOGICAL NATURES OF MAJOR TISSUE COMPONENTS OF DISEASED ARTERIES. ASSOCIATION OF SEGMENTED MAJOR TISSUE COMPONENTS WITH INDIVIDUAL PHYSICAL PROPERTIES FOR THE MECHANICAL RESPONSES PROVIDES AN EXCELLENT BASIS IN COMPUTATIONAL (FINITE ELEMENT) STRESS-STRAIN ANALYSIS. SENSITIVITY ASSESSING OF FOUR MAJOR NONLINEAR GEOMETRIC METHODS FOR STRESS ANALYSIS IN ANSYS PACKAGE IS THE GOAL OF THIS STUDY.
