Abstract:

Due to its side effects (nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity) use and application of this drug is limited.
Ocimum basilicum is used in kidney disorders; the aim of this study was to find out the protective effect of ocimum basilicum extract in nephrotoxicity induced by gentamicin in mice.
In this study Albino mice were used. The positive control group received gentamicin in dose of 160 mg/kg IP, for 5 days. The negative control group received normal saline IP for 5 days. The test groups received Ocimum basilicum extract in doses of 800mg/kg, 400mg/kg, 200mg/kg 30 minutes after gentamicin adminstration for 5 days.
On the day 6th, animals were killed and the blood was taken, serum was prepared, for creatinine and BUN measurement and kidneys were removed, fixed in 10% formaline for histopathological examination.
The result obtained in this study indicated that the Ocimum basilicum extract at dose of 800mg/kg showed significant nephrotoxicity protection (P<0.05). This protective effect is dose depended.
