Abstract:

ALFALFA MOSAIC VIRUS (AMV) IS A DESTRUCTIVE DISEASE ON ALFALFA IN IRAN AND WORLDWILD. IN ADDITION TO ALFALFA CROPS A NUMBER OF WEED SPECIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED AS SECONDRY HOST OF THE VIRUS. IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY THE SECONDRY HOST OF THE VIRUS, DIFFERENT WEED SPECIES WERE COLLECTED FROM ALFALFA FIELDS OF 17 PROVINCES IN IRAN AND SUBSEQUENTLY TESTED BY ELISA AND RT-PCR USING AMV 30F/30R PRIMERS WHICH CAN REPLICATE AMPLICONS IN LENGTH OF 780 BP OF COAT PROTEIN OF AMV. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT ONLY 8 WEED SPECIES INCLUDING SONCHUS SP., CHENOPODIUM SP., HELIOTROPIUM SP., LACTUCA SP., PLANTAGO SP., RUMEX SP. AND TROGOPOGON SP. COLLECTED FROM SIRJAN, SHAHRBABAK, KERMAN, BARDSIR, BAFT, MAHAN REGIONS OF KERMAN, FARSAN REGIONS OF SHAHRKORD AND HAJIABAD REGIONS OF HORMOZGAN PROVINES WERE INFECTED BY AMV. THE RESULTS SHOWED THE HOST RANGE OF AMV IS NOT RESTRICTED TO ALFALFA PLANTS.
