Abstract: 

IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE COMPETENCE OF BEAN CULTIVARS WITH WEEDS, AN INVESTIGATION WAS ACCOMPLISHED USING A FACTORIAL EXPERIMENTE BASED ON A COMPLETE RANDOMIZED BLOCK DESIGN WITH THREE REPLICATIONS DURING 2006 -2007 AT KHAIR-ABAD RESEARCH STATION, ZANJAN, IRAN. THREE RED BEAN CULTIVARS WERE CONSIDERED AS FIRST FACTOR WITH FOUR LEVELS OF SOWING DENSITY WERE ASSUMED AS 2ND FACTOR. DATA REGARDING BEAN BIOMASS, SPECIES WISE NUMBER AND DRIED WEIGHT OF WEEDS WERE RECORDED AT THREE PHONOLOGICAL PHASES BUT THE OTHER AGRONOMIC TRAITS WERE RECORDED AFTER HARVEST. RESULTS REVEALED THAT SAIIAD CULTIVAR WITH 4.8 GRAINS AND DRAKHSHAN WITH 3.8 GRAINS RECORDED THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST NUMBER OF GRAINS / POD RESPECTIVELY WHEREAS DRAKHSHAN RECORDED THE MAXIMUM WEIGHT OF 100 GRAINS (40.3 G) CONTRARY TO SAIIAD RECORDING THE LEAST AMOUNT OF 23.53G.THE LOCAL CULTIVAR REGISTERED THE HIGHEST MEAN HEIGHT OF PLANT (36.45 CM) BUT THE LOWEST AMOUNT OF 29.2 CM WAS RECORDED IN DRAKHSHAN CULTIVAR. THE BEST DENSITY PLANTING FOR LOCAL, SAYAD AND DERAKHSHAN CULTIVARS WERE 35, 40 AND 50 BEAN PLANT/M2, RESPECTIVELY. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES AMONG THE 3 CULTIVARS CONSIDERING YIELD BUT THE LOCAL ONE YIELDED HIGHER AVERAGE AMOUNT OF 10114.3 KG PER HA. FROM THE OVERALL RESULTS, IT COULD BE CONCLUDED THAT INCREASING IN BEAN DENSITY LEADS TO HIGHER BIOMASS AND YIELD OF BEAN.
