Abstract:

EFFECTIVE WEEDS CONTROL AND SUCCESS IN REDUCING THEIR COMPETITION WITH CROPS IS REQUIRED FOR PERMUTATION OF CURRENT APPROACHES AND ATTENDING TO SUSTAINABLE WEEDS MANAGEMENT. IN ORDER TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF COVER CROPS AND TILLAGE SYSTEMS ON WEED CONTROL IN SAFFLOWER, A FIELD STUDY WAS ARRANGED AS A SPLIT PLOT EXPERIMENT BASED ON COMPLETELY RANDOMIZED BLOCK DESIGN WITH FOUR REPLICATIONS. TILLAGE SYSTEMS WERE CONSIDERED AS THE MAIN FACTOR (TRADITIONAL TILLAGE AND NO-TILLAGE) AND THE COVER CROPS (TRITICALE, COMMON VETCH, AND A MIXTURE OF TRITICALE COMMON VETCH) WERE PLACED IN SUBPLOT. A CONTROL TREATMENT (NO COVER CROP) WAS DESIGNATED BESIDE THE EXPERIMENT. THE LOWEST BARNYARD GRASS WEED BIOMASS AND DENSITY WAS OBSERVED IN TRITICALE+NO-TILLAGE TREATMENT AND EFFECTIVE FOR 100% CONTROL. THE COMBINATION OF COMMON VETCH WITH TRADITIONAL TILLAGE WAS APPEARED TO BE THE MOST UNSUITABLE TREATMENT FOR BARNYARD WEED SUPPRESSION, FALLOWED BY CONTROL. IN GENERAL, INTEGRATION OF COVER CROPS WITH NO-TILLAGE WAS THE BEST TREATMENT FOR WEEDS CONTROL.
