Abstract:

IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT SEEDING RATE OF 2 COMPANION CROPS OF GRASS PEA AND BARLEY ON QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF FORAGE YIELD AND WEEDS SUPPRESSION IN ESTABLISHMENT ALFALFA, AN EXPERIMENT WAS CARRIED OUT USING A FACTORIAL DESIGN BASED ON A RBCD LAYOUT IN 2008 AT KHAIR-AABAD RESEARCH STATION, ZANJAN, IRAN. SEEDING RATES OF THE COMPANION CROPS WERE 0, 100, 200 AND 300 SEEDS / M2. RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE HIGHEST AMOUNT OF TOTAL DRY MATTER YIELD (6.09T.HA), DRY WEIGHT OF COMPANION CROPS (4.47 T/HA) AND CRUDE PROTEIN YIELD (938.6KG/HA) WAS OBTAINED FROM SOWING OF 300 SEEDS/ M2. IN THIS SEED DENSITY, AVERAGE OF DRY WEIGHT OF WEEDS AND ALFALFA WERE 68 AND 61.3 PERCENT LOWER THAN PURE ALFALFA TREATMENT RESPECTIVELY. REACTION OF ALFALFA TO COMPANION CROPS AND DIFFERENT SEEDING RATE WAS THE SAME. INCREASING IN SEEDING RATE LED TO DECREASE IN DRY WEIGHT OF WEEDS AND ALFALFA BUT TOTAL DRY MATTER AND CRUDE PROTEIN YIELD WERE INCREASED. OVERALL RESULTS CONFIRMED THE EFFICIENCY OF THE 2 COMPANION CROPS AS A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH IN INCREASE OF QUALITIES AND QUANTITIES OF FORAGE PRODUCTION AND WEEDS SUPPRESSION.
