Abstract: 

THE EXPERIMENT WAS CONDUCTED AT THE RICE RESEARCH INSTITUTE, RASHT, IRAN DURING 2007-08 TO INVESTIGATE THE INTERACTION EFFECTS OF PLANT DENSITY AND WEEDING TIMES ON RICE YIELD IN COMPETITION WITH BARNYARDGRASS (ECHINOCHLOA CRUSS- GALLI). TREATMENTS WERE INCLUDED RICE DENSITY (120000, 160000 AND 200000 PLANTS HA-1), WEEDING TIMES (CONTROL, 21, 42 AND WHOLE SEASON WEED-FREE) AND BARLEY STRAW APPLICATION (0 AND 100 KG HA-1). YIELD LOSSES PREDICTED USING COUSENSE HYPERBOLIC MODEL INDEPENDENT VARIABLES DESCRIBING IN TERMS OF WEED DENSITY. RESULTS SHOWED THAT RICE YIELD, BARNYARD GRASS DENSITY AND ITS DRY WEIGHT WERE VARIED SIGNIFICANTLY DUE TO THE VARIATION IN POPULATION DENSITIES AND WEEDING TIMES. A 160000 PLANTS HA-1 PRODUCED THE HIGHEST YIELD AND INHIBITION RATE OF BARNYARD GRASS SEEDLING GROWTH. THE BEST RESULTS OF WEED CONTROL WERE OBTAINED IN 42 WEEDING DAYS. THE FINDINGS INDICATED THAT THE MODEL COULD PREDICT CROP LOSS DUE TO WEED COMPETITION OVER A WIDE RANGE OF CROP AND WEED DENSITY.
