Abstract: 

IN ORDER TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF GEOGRAPHICAL ORIGIN ON GERMINATION CHARACTERISTICS OF COMMON LAMBSQUARTERS SEEDS, AN EXPERIMENT WAS CONDUCTED AT RESEARCH LABORATORY OF FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE, BIRJAND UNIVERSITY IN AUTUMN 2008 AND WINTER 2009. TWO LAMBSQUARTERS POPULATIONS INCLUDING BIRJAND (BI) AND DANISH (DA) WERE EMPLOYED IN THIS EXPERIMENT AND EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS INCLUDING LIGHT; ALTERNATING TEMPERATURES, SALINITY AND DROUGHT ON THEIR GERMINATION WERE ASSESSED IN SEPARATE EXPERIMENTS. RESULTS SHOWED THAT LIGHT STIMULATED GERMINABILITY OF BOTH POPULATIONS. THE OPTIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR GERMINATION OF DA WAS LOWER THAN THAT OF BI. TEMPERATURES ABOVE 30C REDUCED THE GERMINABILITY OF BOTH POPULATIONS, ALTHOUGH THIS DECLINE IN DA WAS MUCH MORE SEVERE COMPARED WITH BI. THE IRANIAN POPULATION SHOWED A HIGHER LEVEL OF SALINITY AND DROUGHT RESISTANCE AT GERMINATION AND EARLY SEEDLING GROWTH COMPARED WITH THE DANISH ONE WHICH MIGHT BE RELATED TO THE CONDITIONS OF THE ENVIRONMENTS IN WHICH THE MOTHER PLANTS OF THESE POPULATIONS HAVE GROWN. RESULTS OF THIS STUDY CONFIRM THAT PLANTS THAT GROW IN MORE STRESSFUL ENVIRONMENTS (E.G., TEMPERATURE, SALINITY AND DROUGHT STRESS) WOULD PRODUCE MORE RESISTANT SEEDS WHICH COULD BEAR ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS MORE EFFICIENTLY.
