Abstract:

IT IS NOW GENERALLY ACCEPTED THAT CERTAIN WEED SPECIES OR SOME OF THEIR PARTS RELEASE INTO THEIR ENVIRONMENT ALLELOPATHIC SUBSTANCES THAT INCREASE THEIR ABILITY TO COMPETE WITH OTHER SPECIES. ALLELOPATHIC SUBSTANCES COULD INHIBIT OR STIMULATE GROWTH OF NEIGHBORHOOD PLANTS. JOHNSON GRASS PRODUCE ALLELOPATHIC COMPOUND IN LEAVES RHIZOMES WHICH IS INHIBITED GERMINATION AND SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENT OF MOST OF SEEDLING. THE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE EFFECT OF JOHNSON GRASS FRESH RHIZOMES EXTRACT AND RESIDUES ON COWPEA SEEDLING GROWTH. RESULTS SHOWED FRESH RHIZOME EXTRACT DECREASED LEAF AREA, SEEDLING LENGTH AND ROOT FRESH WEIGHT OF COWPEA SIGNIFICANTLY. RHIZOMES RESIDUES WERE ALSO DECLINED LEAF AREA, SEEDLING LENGTH, AND DRY MATTER OF ROOT, LEAF AND TOTAL BIOMASS.
