Abstract: 

CROP RESIDUE AND PLANT DENSITY ARE TWO METHODS WHICH IS USED TO SUPPRESS WEEDS IN ORGANIC AGRICULTURE. IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE OPTIMIZATION OF WHEAT RESIDUES AND DENSITY OF SUNFLOWER AN EXPERIMENT WERE HELD IN SUMMER 2007 AT COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE, UNIVERSITY OF BIRJAND. EXPERIMENT WAS ARRANGED IN FACTORIAL BASED ON COMPLETELY RANDOMIZED DESIGN WITH THREE REPLICATIONS. TREATMENTS WERE INCLUDED FIVE LEVELS OF WHEAT RESIDUE 0, 1250, 2500, 3750, 5000KGHA-1 AND THREE LEVELS OF SUNFLOWER DENSITIES 50000, 70000 AND 90000 PHA-1. RESULTS SHOWED THAT MAXIMUM WEED SUPPRESSION ON 3000 KGHA-1 WHEAT RESIDUE WITH DENSITY OF SUNFLOWER 90000 PHA-1 AND 3250 KGHA-1 WHEAT RESIDUE WITH 85000 PHA-1 SUNFLOWER DENSITY. WHEAT RESIDUE INCREASED MORE THAN 5000KGHA-1 CAUSED INCREASE IN WEED BIOMASS. RESULTS OF THIS EXPERIMENT SHOWED, WHEAT RESIDUE AND SUNFLOWER DENSITY BOTH WERE IMPORTANT FOR A GOOD WEED MANAGEMENT.
