Abstract: 

INCREASING CROP DIVERSITY CAN CAUSE WEED GROWTH CHANGING. IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE GROWTH INDICES OF REDROOT PIGWEED (AMARANTHUS RETROFLEXUS L.) AND JIMSON WEED (DATURA STRAMONIUM L.) IN CORN AND SOYBEAN INTERCROPPING, A FIELD STUDY WAS CARRIED OUT IN KARAJ DURING 2006 GROWING SEASON. TREATMENTS WERE ARRANGED IN A FACTORIAL EXPERIMENT BASED ON RANDOMIZED COMPLETE BLOCKS WITH THREE REPLICATIONS. EXPERIMENTAL FACTORS WERE FIVE DIFFERENT MIXING RATIOS OF CORN (ZEA MAYS L.) AND SOYBEAN (GLYCINE MAX L.) CONSISTED OF: 100% CORN: 0% SOYBEAN (P1), 75:25 (P2), 50:50 (P3), 25:75 (P4) AND 0:100 (P5) ALSO FOUR LEVELS OF WEED INFESTATION CONSISTED OF: WEED FREE (W1), INFESTATION OF REDROOT PIGWEED (W2), INFESTATION OF JIMSON WEED (W3) AND SIMULTANEOUS INFESTATION OF BOTH WEEDS SPECIES (W4). WEED DENSITY WAS 15 PLANTS PER METER OF ROW. RESULTS SHOWED THAT TREND OF LEAF AREA INDEX, DRY MATTER ACCUMULATION AND WEED GROWTH RATE FOR WEED SPECIES WERE GOING UP IN SOYBEAN PURE STAND AND DECREASED WITH INCREASING CORN RATIO. THEIR MINIMUM AMOUNTS IN 50:50 (CORN: SOYBEAN) INTERCROP REFERRED TO SUPPRESSING WEED ABILITY OF INTERCROPPING.
