Abstract: 

IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE WEED DIVERSITY AND BIOMASS IN MONOCULTURE AND INTERCROP OF MILLET AND BEAN AN EXPERIMENT WAS CONDUCTED AS COMPLETE RANDOMIZED BLOCK DESIGN WITH 4 TREATMENTS AND 4 REPLICATIONS AT THE AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH STATION, FERDOWSI UNIVERSITY OF MASHHAD, IRAN, DURING 2008. TREATMENTS INCLUDED MONOCULTURES, INTERCROPPING OF MILLET AND BEAN AND A CONTROL TREATMENT WHERE WEEDS GREW WITHOUT CROPS. IN THIS EXPERIMENT SHANNON DIVERSITY INDEX AND WEED BIOMASS WAS INVESTIGATED BEFORE AND AFTER CLOSURE CANOPY. RESULT INDICATED THAT IN BOTH STAGE DIFFERENCE WEED BIOMASS AND SHANNON INDEX WAS SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED BY TREATMENTS. IN BOTH STAGE INTERCROPPING HAD THE LOWEST SHANNON INDEX BUT WAS NOT DIFFERED WITH MONOCULTURES. WEED BIOMASS WAS LOWEST IN INTERCROPPING AND IT SHOWED SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE WITH MONOCULTURES AND WEED GROWTH WITHOUT CROPS. THIS WORK MAY HELP IN DEVELOPING WEED MANAGEMENT PRACTICES THAT ARE ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND.
