Abstract: 

SINCE AGRICULTURE IS THE BOTH SOURCE AND SINK OF GREENHOUSE GASES AND THE PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES OF C3 AND C4 SPECIES TO THE HIGHER ATMOSPHERIC CO2 CONCENTRATION ARE DIFFERENT, AN EXPERIMENT WAS CONDUCTED AT THE RESEARCH GREENHOUSE OF THE FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE FERDOWSI UNIVERSITY OF MASHHAD. THE PURPOSE OF THE EXPERIMENT WAS TO EXAMINE THE EFFECT OF ELEVATED CO2 CONCENTRATION ON COMPETITION ABILITY OF CHENOPODIUM ALBUM AGAINST CROPS IN THE FORM OF FACTORIAL WITH A COMPLETELY RANDOMIZED BLOCK DESIGN AND THREE REPLICATIONS. THE TREATMENTS INCLUDED AMBIENT (360 PPM) CO2 AND ELEVATED (700 PPM) CO2 CONCENTRATIONS AND VARIOUS COMBINATIONS OF THE PLANTATION OF CH. ALBUM AND CROPS OF C3 AND C4 SPECIES, WHETHER OF THE PURE CULTURE OR INTER CROPPING. RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENT SHOWED THAT, AS THE CO2 CONCENTRATION INCREASED, CH. ALBUMS (C3) STEM LENGTH, STEM DRY MATTER AND ROOT VOLUME DECREASED AGAINST SOYBEAN AND MILLET.
