Abstract: 

THE EFFECTS OF WATER FERN (AZOLLA FILICULOIDES LAM.) ON WEEDS GERMINATION AND EMERGENCE WERE EVALUATED IN TERMS OF PLOT AREA COVERAGE BY AZOLLA MAT IN A RICE PADDY FIELD EXPERIMENT IN THE RASHT RICE RESEARCH INSTITUTE, IRAN IN 2007- 2008. TREATMENTS WERE WATER FERN DENSITIES AT 0, 1250, 2500 AND 5000 KG HA-1 WITH 2 BARLEY STRAW LEVELS (0 AND 100 KG HA-1). THE EXPERIMENT WAS CONDUCTED FOLLOWING A RANDOMIZED SPLIT PLOT DESIGN WITH THREE REPLICATIONS. RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE MAXIMUM RICE YIELD WAS OBTAINED AT 5000 KG HA-1 AZOLLA WITH 100 KG HA-1 BARLEY STRAW. ALSO, AZOLLA DID NOT HAVE ANY DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON THE GROWTH OF RICE PLANTS.
