Abstract:

THIS EXPERIMENT WAS SET UP IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE SOME TRAITS RELATED TO BALLISTIC SEED DISPERSAL OF OXALIS (OXALIS CORNICULATA L. VAR. ATROPURPUREA AND O. C. VAR. PARVIFOLIA) IN AUSTRALIA. THE CONCENTRIC CIRCLES METHOD USED FOR STUDYING SEED DISPERSAL PATTERN. FIVE REPLICATES OF EACH SPECIES WERE PLANTED INTO POTS WITH DEPTH AND DIAMETER OF 20 CM. AFTER TEN DAYS OF DISPERSAL, THE NUMBER OF SEEDS IN EACH RADIAL DISTANCE BAND WAS COUNTED AND WEIGHED COLLECTIVELY. FINDINGS SHOWED THAT ENHANCEMENT OF DISTANCE FROM PARENT PLANT DECREASED NUMBER OF SEEDS, BUT SEED WEIGHT INCREASED. THIS IS A MECHANISM FOR EVADING OF OFF SPRINGS FOR COMPLETION WITH PARENT PLANT.
