Abstract: 

Mn exploration is difficult due to physical and chemical characteristics of manganese and its ore minerals. Geochemically Mn is mobile to moderately mobile element corresponding to the physico-chemical environment. Therefore geochemical method usually encountered limitation on Mn exploration. Lithogeochemical method, Mn content or Mn/Fe ratio have been used in Mn-exploration. In most of exploration literature it has been considered that geophysical methods are not effective in Mn exploration. Mn deposits show good response to electric and magnetic fields and in special cases intense self potential electric and induced magnetic field could be detected. Geophysical exploration with those methods could be practically challenging due to geological and structural complexity and in some cases are ineffective. Sedimentary Mn deposits are generally hosted by low steep beds of marl, limestone, sandstone and tuffite and the recorded anomaly from them are uniform without any reference for comparison. Seismic method is the method that could be used for sedimentary Mn deposits in association with geological-physical model. In recent study refractive seismic methods of second arrivals, refraction along second and third layer border, in combination with direct modeling has been used for Mn exploration in south west of Qum province. The results indicate that detailed physical-geological models, calculation of waves cinematic in conjunction with seismic field records and contemporaneous interpretation of records and model could be successfully used for low steep sedimentary Mn deposits.
