Abstract:

UNDERSTANDING OF JIMSON WEED (DATURA STRAMONIUM) DORMANCY AND GERMINATION, ONE THE IMPORTANT WEED IN IRAN, COULD LEAD TO ITS BETTER MANAGEMENT. A LABORATORY STUDY BASED ON FACTORIAL EXPERIMENT WAS CONDUCTED TO THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT TREATMENTS ON BREAKING SEED DORMANCY AND GERMINATION CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS WEED AT BIRJAND UNIVERSITY IN 2006. FIRST FACTOR LEVELS WERE SAND PAPER, PER-CHILL, SAND PAPER + PER-CHILL, KNO3 AND CONTROL, SECOND FACTOR LEVELS WERE CONSTANT (25°C) AND ALTERNATIVE (30/20°C DAY/NIGHT) TEMPERATURE. RESULTS INDICATED THAT JIMSON WEED SEEDS GERMINATION WERE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE IN ALTERNATIVE THAN CONSTANT TEMPERATURE. THE MOST DORMANCY BREAKING, SEED GERMINATION PERCENTAGE AS WELL AS GERMINATION INDEX AND RATE WERE OBSERVED IN SAND PAPER, SAND PAPER + PER-CHILL AND PER-CHILL TREATMENTS, RESPECTIVELY AT ALTERNATIVE TEMPERATURE. ACCORDING TO THESE RESULTS, THE HARD COVER MAY BE THE MAIN FACTOR OF DORMANCY IN FRESH SEEDS OF JIMSON WEED.
