Abstract: 

IN ORDER TO FIND THE EFFECTS OF ANGLE OF QUADRAT SAMPLING ON MAP PRECISION OF WEEDS DISTRIBUTION IN SUGARBEETN PLANTATIONS, A FIELD EXPERIMENT WAS CONDUCTED IN 2009 AT FERDOWSI UNIVERSITY OF MASHHAD EXPERIMENTAL FIELD. IN CONTRAST TO PREVIOUS STUDIES WHICH USED A FIXED SAMPLING APPROACH WE TRIED TO CHANGE THE SAMPLING METHOD TO SEE IF THERE IS ANY EFFECT ON MAP PRECISION. IN ORDER TO PERFORM THE EXPERIMENT, GRIDS BY SIZE OF 7 BY 7 METER WERE EMPLOYED AND WITHIN THEM THE QUADRTARTS BY SIZE OF 0.2 BY 0.4 METER WERE USED. SAMPLING WAS CONDUCTED WHEN THE SUGAR BEET PLANTS WERE AT 4 LEAF STAGE. ALL QUADRATS WERE SWAYED BY ANGLES OF 0, 45, 90, 135 DEGREES FOR EACH SAMPLING. AT EACH SAMPLING, THE NUMBER OF PURSLINE WEED (PORTULACE OLERACE) WAS COUNTED. OUR RESULTS INDICTED THAT AT ANGLES OF 90 AND 45 DEGREES THE NUGGET EFFECT WAS AT ITS LOWEST VALUE (0.20) WHILE AT 0 DEGREE NUGGET EFFECT SHOWED THE HIGHEST VALUE OF 0.75. THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST RANGE WAS OBTAINED AT 0 AND 135 DEGREE RESPECTIVELY. OUR FURTHER SURVEY SHOWED THAT THE OPTIMUM ANGLE MIGHT BE BASED ON THE MAJOR MANAGEMENT FACTORS, LIKE TILLAGE DIRECTION, EMPLOYED WITHIN THE TARGET FIELD.
