Abstract: 

TODAY IT IS AN ISSUE THAT MOST OIL INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY EXPERTS AGREE THAT MORE HYDROCARBON RESERVOIRS IN THE WORLD, INCLUDING IRAN, HAVE BEEN EVACUATED TO THE END. ACCESS TO NEW RESERVOIRS AND PRODUCTION OF RESERVOIRS REQUIRES NEW AND POWERFUL EQUIPMENT TO BE AVAILABLE. REDUCING FORMATION DAMAGE, AVOIDING STUCK DRILLING PIPE, DRILLING IN FRACTURED RESERVOIRS, INCREASING THE PENETRATION RATE AND BIT LIFE, ARE AMONG THE MOST IMPORTANT ADVANTAGES OF UBD METHOD. HOWEVER, USING THIS METHOD MAY CAUSES WELLBORE COLLAPSE AND WALL DEGRADATION, WHICH IS DUE TO THE PENETRATION OF FLUID RESERVOIR INTO THE WELL AND OVERCOME THE HYDROSTATIC COLUMN OF DRILLING MUD. SO IN UBD TECHNOLOGY ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS CONDITIONS, GEO-MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ROCK AND ALSO THE CALCULATED HYDRAULIC DRILLING MUD MUST BE EVALUATED. IN THIS PAPER THE APPLICABILITY OF UNDER BALANCED DRILLING METHOD, WELLBORE STABILITY ANALYSIS IN ONE OF OIL RESERVOIRS IN SOUTHERN IRAN AT THE ASMARI FORMATION IN BOTH VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL WELLS, USING THE NUMERICAL MODELING (FLAC SOFTWARE) IS CARRIED OUT. THERE ARE FOUR LAYERS OF CARBONATE, CARBONATE- MARLEY, SANDSTONE AND SHALE IN ASMARI FORMATION. FOR TWO-DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS WITH REGARD TO LAYER THICKNESS, IN THE CARBONATE LAYERS, TWO SECTIONS AND IN OTHER LAYERS, EACH SECTION WERE CONSIDERED. FINALLY THE OPTIMUM MUD WEIGHT LIMITS TO STABILIZE THE WALLS FOR EACH SECTION IN UNDER BALANCE DRILLING METHOD, WAS OBTAINED.
