Abstract: 

IN THIS PAPER TWO PHASE FLOW OF DRILLING MUD (NON-NEWTONIAN FLUID) AND CUTTING IS SIMULATED WITH THE COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS. TWO-PHASE FLOW OF LIQUID - SOLID MOVED BETWEEN THE WALLS OF THE WELL DRILLING AND STRING (CENTRIC AND ECCENTRIC ANNULUS). CUTTING AS THE SOLID PHASE AND FOR CALCULATING THE STRESS EXTENDED HERSCHEL BULKLEY MODEL, HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED. USING THE EXPERIMENTAL DATA REPORTED FOR THE FLOW OF DRILLING MUD, AND NON-NEWTONIAN PARAMETERS OF THE MODEL ARE DETERMINED. THEN THE PROFILE OF THE AXIAL AND ROTATIONAL SPEED TO THE CENTRIC AND ECCENTRIC ANNULUS IS VALIDATED. THE EFFECTS OF FLOW RATE, SHAFT SPEED, FLUID TYPE, RATE OF PENETRATION, CUTTING SIZE AND THE PERCENTAGE OF ECCENTRICITY TO CUTTING TRANSPORTATION AND PRESSURE DROP HAVE BEEN STUDIED. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT THE CHOICE OF FLUID WAS VERY IMPORTANT AND WITH INCREASING YIELD STRESS AND VISCOSITY OF THE FLUID MUD, CUTTING TRANSPORTATION PERCENT INCREASED. BUT IN THIS CASE MORE HYDRODYNAMIC POWER IS NEEDED. THEN THE COSTS WILL BE INCREASED. WITH INCREASING THE FLOW RATE, CUTTING TRANSPORT FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE SURFACE IS INCREASED. BUT ALSO IT INCREASED PRESSURE DROP. SO, OPTIMUM FLOW RATE HAS TO BE CLARIFIED. FINE PARTICLES CAN BE TRANSPORTED MORE EASILY IN COMPARISON WITH COARSE PARTICLES. ROTATION DRILLING STRING ALSO HAS A POSITIVE EFFECT ON THE TRANSPORT CUTTING. THERE ARE CRITICAL POINTS FOR EACH OF THESE PARAMETERS IN ORDER TO INCREASE CUTTING TRANSPORTATION TO OPTIMIZE TECHNICAL AND ECONOMICAL DRILLING. INCREMENT OR DECREMENT OF PARAMETERS IS NOT SUITABLE FOR TECHNICAL AND ECONOMICAL DRILLING.
