Abstract: 

IN RECENT YEARS, A CONCERN ABOUT LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF HEAVY METALS AS ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS HAS INCREASED. CLAYS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE ENVIRONMENT WITH NATURAL CLEANING BY HIGH INTAKES OF CATION AND ANION THROUGH CATION EXCHANGE OR ADSORPTION OR BOTH OF THEM. IN THIS STUDY, REMOVAL OF CADMIUM FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION BY NANOCLAY AS A FUNCTION OF CONTACT TIME, PH, CADMIUM CONCENTRATION AND AMOUNT OF NANOCLAY WAS STUDIED IN BATCH SYSTEM. RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE OPTIMUM PH FOR THE NANOCLAY IN 1000 MG/L CD CONCENTRATION IS 5.5, AND OPTIMUM CONTACT TIME IS 20 MINUTES. THE ADSORPTION CAPACITY INCREASED AND THE ADSORPTION EFFICIENCY DECREASED WITH INCREASING CONCENTRATION OF CADMIUM IONS AND REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF ADSORBENT. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE NANOCLAY HAS MANY ADVANTAGES SUCH AS REMOVAL EFFICIENCY AT HIGH CONCENTRATIONS, SHORT REACTION TIME AND CAN BE AN EFFECTIVE METHOD IN REMOVAL OF CADMIUM FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS.
