Abstract: 

MINIMIZING THE DRILLING COST OF THE DIRECTIONAL OR THE HORIZONTAL WELL IS A MAJOR CONCERN OF THE DRILLING ENGINEERS. COST IS TRADITIONALLY OPTIMIZED THROUGH IMPROVING ELEMENTS OF THE OPERATIONS LIKE BIT SELECTION, WEIGHT AND ROTARY SPEED, DRILLING TIME, CASING LENGTH… ETC. THE MINIMUM DRILLING DEPTH IS ACHIEVED AT THE MINIMUM VALUES FOR KICK-POINT, INCLINATION, AND ANGLE BUILD-UP AND DROP-OFF RATES. THE MINIMUM PARAMETERS REDUCE THE DOGLEG SEVERITY, WHICH IN TURN REDUCE THE CHANCES FOR OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS LIKE HIGH TORQUE AND DRAG. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY IS TO DEVELOP A METHOD USING THE HARMONY ALGORITHM TO OPTIMIZE THE DIRECTIONAL & HORIZONTAL WELLS DESIGN PARAMETERS IN ORDER TO MINIMIZE THE DRILLING MEASURED DEPTH. THE HARMONY OPTIMIZATION DESIGN IS COMPARED WITH THE GENETIC OPTIMIZATION DESIGN AND CONVENTIONAL DESIGN.
