Abstract: 

IN RECENT DECADES, REACTIVE DISTILLATION TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN CONSIDERED AS A PROMISING WAY IN OPTIMIZATION OF CHEMICAL PROCESSES. INTEGRATION OF REACTION AND DISTILLATION IN A SINGLE MULTIFUNCTIONAL PROCESS UNIT IS CALLED “REACTIVE DISTILLATION”. IT IS CUSTOMARY TO USE THE TERM OF “CATALYTIC DISTILLATION” ONLY WHEN A SOLID CATALYSTS IS USED BUT BOTH PROCESSES ARE CALLED “REACTIVE DISTILLATION” OR BRIEFLY CALLED RD. REACTIVE DISTILLATION HAS MANY ADVANTAGES INCLUDING: CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM LIMITATIONS CAN BE OVERCOME, HIGHER SELECTIVITY, LOWER INVESTMENT AND EQUILIBRIUM AND ... .IN THIS STUDY, REACTIVE DISTILLATION HAS BEEN USED FOR DEHYDRATION OF ETHANOL TO DIETHYL ETHER OVER A SOLID ACIDIC CATALYST. THE CATALYST IS A POLYMER SOLID CATALYST WITH SULFONIC ACID GROUPS. IN THIS STUDY, THE EFFECT OF PARAMETERS SUCH AS REACTION TEMPERATURE, TIME, AMOUNT CATALYST AND THE LOCATION OF CATALYST HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE HIGHER RATE OF DEHYDRATION IS ACHIEVABLE AS THE REACTION TEMPERATURE AND CATALYST WEIGHT AMOUNT IS INCREASED.
