Abstract: 

SOUR GAS IS ONE OF THE MOST ENERGY SOURCES IN IRAN. BEING OF HYDROGEN IN SOUR GAS, CAUSES VARIOUS FAILURE MECHANISMS SUCH AS HYDROGEN INDUCED CRACKING (HIC) AND STRESS ORIENTED HYDROGEN INDUCED CRACKING (SOHIC). IN THIS PAPER THE FAILURES WHICH OCCURRED ON CONTROL VALVE BODY DUE TO PRESENCE OF SOUR GAS HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED. RESULTS SHOW THAT THE OUTLET AND ALSO SEAT PARTS HAD BEEN REPAIRED BY WELDING METHOD AND THERE ARE MANY CRACKS AND INCLUSIONS IN THE WELD METAL. THESE DEFECTS CAN PROVIDE AVAILABLE PALACES FOR ACCUMULATION OF HYDROGEN AND CRACK INITIATION. THE MICROSCOPIC STUDIES SHOW THAT THERE IS STEP-WISE CRACKING (SWC) IN OUTLET PART AND ALSO PRESENCE SWC AND SOHIC IN SEAT PART. OTHERWISE NO CRACK HAS BEEN OBSERVED IN THE BOTTOM OF BODY WHICH DOESN’T HAVE ANY WELD METAL. THIS MEANS THAT THE REPAIRING PROCESS HAD NOT BEEN DONE ACCORDING TO APPROPRIATE WELDING PROCESS. TURBULENT FLOWS IN THE BOTTOM PART CREATE UNIFORM EROSION CORROSION; THEREFORE PROVIDE HIGHER METAL LOSS IN COMPARISON OF TWO OTHER PARTS. FURTHERMORE THESE TURBULENT FLOWS PREVENT OF HYDROGEN ADSORPTION AND HIC HAVE NOT BEEN OCCURRED.
