Abstract: 

THE PSEUDOPYLIDEAN CESTODE, LIGULA SP. COMMONLY INFECTS CYPRINID FISHES IN IRANIAN FRESHWATER SYSTEMS. THE GENUS LIGULA HAS THREE HOSTS IN ITS LIFE CYCLES IN WHICH THE LIGULOSIS RESULTED FROM THE STAGE, PLEUROCERCOID IS ONE OF THE FREQUENT AND FAMOUS DISEASES IN CYPRINIDAE IN IRAN. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PROBLEMS IN HOST–PARASITE ECOLOGY IS THE NEGATIVE EFFECT OF PARASITE ON THE GROWTH, DEGENERATION OF THE GONADS AND BLOOD PRESSURE OF THE HOST. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PRESENT STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE THE PARAMETERS OF THE PARASITE-HOST RELATION IN LIGULA SP. IN PSEUDORASBORA PARVA IN CHAH-NIMEH RESERVOIR OF ZABOL. PSEUDORASBORA PARVA WAS CAUGHT USING BEACH SEINING. THE COLLECTED SPECIMENS WERE IMMEDIATELY FIXED IN 10% FORMALIN. FISH WERE DISSECTED AND THEN PARASITES WERE EXAMINED. THE FISH WEIGHTS AND STANDARD LENGTH OF INFECTED AND UNINFECTED SPECIMENS WERE MEASURED ACCURATELY. THE PARASITES FOUND WERE NUMERICALLY DETERMINED AND THEIR WEIGHTS WERE MEASURED. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT PLEUROCERCOID LARVAL STAGES OF LIGULA SP. WERE FOUND IN THE BODY CAVITIES OF 17 OF THE 84 OF PSEUDORASBORA PARVA. EACH FISH CONTAINED A SINGLE TAPEWORM WHICH IS IN CONGRUENT WITH THE RESULTS OF OTHER RESEARCHERS EXCEPT IN THREE OCCASIONS WHEN THERE WERE THREE TAPEWORMS PER FISH. THE AVERAGE WEIGHT OF THE UNINFECTED FISH WAS DETERMINED AS1.21±0.55 G, WHILE THE AVERAGE WEIGHT OF THE INFECTED FISH EXCEPT FOR THE PARASITE IS DETERMINED AS 1.74±0.86 G. ACCORDING TO THIS RESEARCH, IT WAS CALCULATED THAT LIGULA INTESTINALIS PLEROCERCOID CAUSES INCREASE IN THE FISH WEIGHT WHILE OTHER RESEARCHER REPORTED THAT INFECTED FISH SHOW DECREASE IN WEIGHT. IN FINALLY WE THOUGHT THE OBTAINED RESULTS ARE DUE TO INSUFFICIENT SAMPLING.
