Abstract: 

Approximately more than half of the world coal is prepared by gravity-based methods. Among these methods, the heavy media due to its higher capacity and efficiency is of prime importance. At the Zarand coal washing plant, +10-400 mm size fraction is processed by the heavy media method consisting of two separators. Based on the design criterion of the plant, the density of these separators should be 1.8 and 1.45 g/cm3, respectively. Generally, the efficiency of gravity separators are determined through the distribution curves in which the percent of material transferred to the concentrate is drawn versus the density. The probable error, the slope of the distribution curve between points of 25 and 75%, is the criterion which shows the performance of the gravity separator. The results of this research indicated that at the Zarand coal washing plant the probable error in the first and second separators were 0.05, and 0.03, respective.
